Enterprise Wi-Fi 7 Organisation/college/school Campus Network Architecture

High-density multi-vendor wireless design combining Ubiquiti UniFi & TP-Link Omada Wi-Fi 7 APs, MikroTik core routing, Sophos perimeter firewall, and RADIUS 802.1X identity management.

Campus Environment & Challenges

  • High-Density Client Congestion: Auditoriums, libraries, and hostels experience spectrum saturation from 3,000+ simultaneous devices.
  • Architectural Signal Attenuation: Severe indoor Wi-Fi dead zones are caused by thick concrete hostel walls and RCC lab structures.
  • Unsanctioned Rogue APs & Hotspots: Heavy co-channel RF interference is generated by personal student routers and mobile hotspots.

Next-Generation Campus Connectivity

  • Next-Gen Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Standard: Delivers multi-gigabit speeds up to 46 Gbps with sub-2ms deterministic latency using ultra-wide 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM modulation, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO).
  • High-Density Client Handling: Engineered to support 3,000+ simultaneous devices in congested areas without spectrum saturation.
  • AI-Driven RF & Spectrum Optimization: Mitigates co-channel interference through automated channel selection, power auto-tuning, and 6 GHz band offloading.
  • Zero-Trust Security & Dynamic VLANs: Features automated VLAN assignment, WPA3-Enterprise encryption, and 802.1X user authentication to separate staff, students, infrastructure, and visitors.

Physical Infrastructure & High-Density Access Layer

MDF/IDF Server Topography

  • Hostel In-Wall Wi-Fi 7 APs: Flush wall-plate APs per room equipped with PoE passthrough and 4 Gigabit RJ45 ports.
  • Building IDF Floor Racks: Floor-wise 24/48-port Managed PoE+ switches linked to the central MDF via 10G SFP+ single-mode fiber.
  • Central MDF: Houses Edge Core (MikroTik CCR2004 + Sophos XGS HA), Identity Server (FreeRADIUS + Active Directory/LDAP), and Syslog Appliance (12TB Storage for CERT-In Logs).

Access Points Deployment

  • Ubiquiti UniFi Wi-Fi 7 (U7-Pro / Max): Features 2.5G Multi-Gigabit Ethernet uplink and 6 GHz 2x2 MU-MIMO. Managed via UniFi Cloud Gateway. Deployed in administrative blocks, executive boardrooms, and outdoor campus quads.
  • TP-Link Omada Wi-Fi 7 (EAP770 / 720): Delivers Tri-Band BE11000 speeds powered by PoE+ 802.3at. Managed via Omada OC300 Controller. Focused on high-density lecture halls, central libraries, and dormitories.

Layer 3 Routing & Campus Segmentation

The network relies on a MikroTik CCR2116 Core Router providing inter-VLAN wirespeed routing with hardware FastPath acceleration, paired with a Sophos XGS Next-Gen Firewall for deep packet inspection, TLS 1.3 decryption, and automated threat containment.

VLAN ID Segment Name Subnet Security Policy
VLAN 10 Management / Infra 10.10.0.0/24 Strict Admin Access
VLAN 20 Faculty & Staff 10.20.0.0/21 802.1X / Full Intranet
VLAN 30 Student Wireless 10.30.0.0/19 802.1X / Peer Isolation
VLAN 40 Visitor / Guest 10.40.0.0/20 Captive Portal / Internet Only

Authentication Pathways

  • Staff & Student (802.1X): Connects via secure EAP-TLS/PEAP-MSCHAPv2 negotiation. FreeRADIUS queries the Active Directory/LDAP database, automatically assigning VLAN 20 or 30.
  • Visitor Captive Portal: Automatic HTTP redirection to a landing page requiring SMS/Email OTP validation, granting dynamically rate-limited web access on VLAN 40 with peer isolation.

Regulatory & Cyber Compliance

The infrastructure is fully compliant with Indian Information Technology Rules & DoT Wi-Fi Public Hotspot Guidelines.

  • CERT-In 1-Year Log Retention: Syslog server stores NTP-synchronized IPDR, NAT translation, and DHCP lease logs for 365 days.
  • DoT KYC & Traceability: Strict identity mapping pairing static MAC addresses with student roll numbers or mobile OTPs via RADIUS.
  • Legal Intercept Readiness: User-specific traffic mirror port capability on the Sophos Firewall for law enforcement compliance.
  • Visitor Guest Auditing: Mandatory SMS OTP verification storing mobile numbers with timestamped session logs.

Sustained Operations & Network Topology

The end-to-end topology connects Dual ISP WANs to the Sophos XGS FW and MikroTik Core via 10 Gbps SFP+ Direct Attach Copper (DAC) trunks, feeding 2.5 Gbps Multi-Gigabit PoE+ switches powering the APs.

  • 24/7 NOC Cloud Monitoring: Hostaxis provides centralized telemetry with active threat alerts.
  • Firmware Patch Lifecycle: Automated rolling updates occur during off-peak night windows to eliminate downtime.
  • Hardware SLA: Supported by a rapid spare replacement protocol and a 4-Hour On-Site SLA for hardware failovers.

System Capacity & Deployment

  • Core Backbone: 10 Gbps Fiber
  • Access Points: 300+ UniFi & Omada APs
  • Concurrent Clients: 8,000+
  • Uptime Design: 99%
